Hey Brian Teifer, tell Gabe Verespej that I remember his Vicks vaporub story...

anyone have any info on Dave Berg? He was a great friend who also left Ike a smidgen early due to a disagreement over a urinalysis (and he almost beat the rap).

Part XIV - Popped! Or NOT ...

The story of early departures due to whiz quizzes reminded me about Ted (the guy who puked up blood in my earlier post).

This is what I heard second hand - remember how I said Ted ended up in Portsmouth Naval Hospital ? Well, while he was there being treated, a routine blood test was positive for marijuana. If the sun never shined on Ted, it did that day. They had failed to inform him that they were testing for drugs - and that was a legal requirement to enforce the results. Of course, he could waive that requirement, but Ted opted to take another test.

By that time, his system was clean. Some guys have all the luck.

A few other guys weren't so lucky, and went down due to a positive test. And some didn't care at all - Mick even wore a coke spoon around his neck. He did get popped and booted, but his parents were rich. As I heard it, he simply got set up with his own apartment, car, and started college.

Talk about luck.

Bull do you remember when they caught that long legged black girl who worked for MWR for hooking. Seems they found $7,000,rolled up in her rack. All hell broke loose till....THEY FOUND CHECKS of officers name going up past the handler!(Not my handler the one he relieved)Hmmmm but I thought how stupid these guys where paying 200 a pop and then to write a check! The girl never got in trouble, slap on the wrist! The girl in the video worked in V-1.

The Sea Lawyer

We had a guy in RM division we called "The Sea Lawyer." It didn't matter what we were talking about, this guy had a plan or a scheme for any situation you could think of.

To give you an example of his expertise...while this guy was at prototype as a staff pick-up, he got popped on a piss test. He convinced the "powers that be" that his positive piss test was a result of the poppy seeds on top of the bagels he ate every day.

His case was dropped and they quit selling poppy seed bagels at the cafeteria.

Hotel and a Hooker at MWR

ABH1, I forgot all about that. It is amazing what you will remember by reading the stories on this site. I remember the lady in MWR selling more than hotel reservations. A friend from security told me she had made an obscene amount of money. The fact that she had officers as clients does not surprise me. When I would have the catapult steam machinist/supervisor watch at night and would be walking around the 03 level you would see females sneaking into male staterooms all the time. They had the same hormones as us. It got to be a game for us to see who could spot the most illicit visits in a week.

I remember when we were in Dubrovnik I had walked into a hotel looking for a restaurant and right infront of me an officer and SK1 I knew walked out of a room together.

Ikemare and the smells

I had one of those "Ikemare/nightmares" last night. The thing about mine is that the smells in the dream are so vivid. I experienced some smells last night in that dream I had forgotten about. Smells I have not smelt in 5 years.

Who can forget the rotten socks that would seem to always be present in at least one laundry bag in every berthing. Or the one toilet in every head that was backed up and had not flushed in a week.

How could those of us that were there since 95 forget the smell of the rooms where they would melt the plastic waste into those discs.

The overpowering smell of jp-5 comming out of 2 pumproom. I do not know how those guys could stand a whole watch down there I would not be able to breathe after about 3 minutes.

How about the smell of the Deisel Generator exhaust that the ships ventalation would suck back in directly to the shops.

The sardine stench from the 3 tins that the guy who stood watch before you ate. There are more smells than I can list.

The one smell that used to gag me like a goat was when DP1 Big Ed would come back drunk from liberty, and then dig into a big jar of pickled pigs feet.

Security

So they kicked off the marines and replaced them with ship's personnel? Damn! Can't imagine that. The MAA's were hard enough to deal with as it was. Always having to run into the plant access to get away. Hell if they have guns now they would probably shoot you. And nukes being sent off for security detail? I know I would have been shitcanned off for that duty! IB

Jerky Treats

I was ambling through a nearby berthing one day, and I noted there were Jerky Treats on the lounge table ... the kind you give to Fido.

I guess the guy that got that care package ate them, none the wiser.

How can I post some of the many, many pics I took during my time on IKE and during the Med Cruise in '82? Better yet, does anyone even care about seeing these photos?

Thanks,
John
