Merry Christmas

A Merry Christmas to current and past IKE sailors, we have earned some good times.

This web site has been the best Christmas present I could have imagined, I have read every post (for the last 3 days) and have laughed myself silly like Flounder used to do.

I have to give a shout out to Tim P (AKA Flounder), you sir have always been a man among boys.

Good times in Central

Hi Larry - The names Norman Wells and Jeff Peacock sound very familiar; just can't place the faces...I stood Load Dispatcher a lot during the '83 Med and thereafter 'til I got off in August '85. One night we were running drills - Chilly (Carl Childers) was my trainee; one of the reactors scrammed, then the other a few minutes later - then the drill team said "this is not a drill!" Chilly went running off to one of the switchgear rooms - he should have stayed and seen what the LD was supposed to do. We picked up all the pieces, got everything running again. Just by sheer luck someone in RE Div. discovered the problem. I'll spare everyone the technical details because, like Pete, I'd hate to be hauled back in to face charges after all this time out...

speeding ticket

Reading about the XO wanting to write guys up for getting a speeding ticket reminded me of my first ticket. This was May 1986. We were in overhaul in Newport News. I got a ticket on Laskin Rd in Va Beach. This was my first ever. I submitted a 'coupon', as I used to call it. I didn't like that Navy word 'chit'. I submitted a 'coupon' to get a day off to go to court and answer for this ticket. I recall chief Mosher denied it. His reasoning was something like 'You commited a crime and now you wish to be rewarded by getting time off from work'. Of course he was full of crap and when the 'coupon' went further up the chain it was approved.

Then I went to court and learned that there was a 'Navy liaison office' there. Squidly types were supposed to be in uniform and have a buddy and check in here. I did not like this idea. I grew up in Va Beach, and for some reason I took offense at this. I felt like 'Hey, this is between me and my home town. Could the Navy please stay out of it?' So I blew off that part and wore my regular clothes and got off with a reduced fine.

drills dead in the H2O

Flounder, your name sounds familiar but I guess that's just bcause I saw your name in writing. I got to RE Div after you (in Spring of '86). I qualified Load Dispatcher in Feb 1988. I was on the drill team for the 88 Med cruise. I recall Gordon O Dorsey liked to run drills about every night. If I recall correctly the only time we were dead in the water was when we did it as a drill.

Dead in the Water

I remember someone was on the bridge as some sort of phone talker when we went dead in the water.
Some big cheese (admiral) called over to IKE to find out "what were our capabilities?"
The OOD's answer: "We can float"

Norm

Norm Wells, big guy. I remember him coming into E-2 berthing after a long day boozing in port, Toulon or Naples probably. So hammered he could barely stand. Bellowing from the head "I ain't pissing like a girl!" when someone suggested he sit down before he fell down.

Last I heard he had slimmed down and was driving a plant in upstate NY.

ANYWAYS, DOES ANYONE REMEMEBER WHEN THE GUYS IN PLAT LENS SHOP GOT BUSTED WHILE WATCHING A PORNO ? SOMEONE HIT THE WRONG CAMERA BUTTON ON THE PANEL AND THE PORN MOVIE WAS VIEWED THROUGHOUT THE SHIP ON GOOD OLE' IKE TV. THE CAPTAIN AND XO WAS PISSED !! CAPT', DANTONE (AT THAT TIME) WAS A DICK ANYWAY. NEVER SHARED INFORMATION WITH THE CREW LIKE CAPT'N BECK. WELL HAPPY HOLIDAY'S !!!

Johnny - Thank you for the grand compliment; I appreciate it very much; have never really thought of myself as anyone special. Are you the legendary wild man John Vrooman?? Tell us more about yourself and your life since the Nav!
I probably talk about it too much, but I still work aboard a ship - sitting in my office on board as I type this during our afternoon coffee break - the ship is a cable layer sailing out of the island of Curaçao in the southern Caribbean - have a bunch of great guys working for me - it's the best job in the world.
