More Apple Pie

We got fresh hot apple pie every time we had a G.Q. Drill. We were in repair locker 3 right above the cheifs mess. I was team leader for the pipe patching team. We would take the giant bag that all the oakum, wood, and twine went in down to the cheifs mess directly below the repair locker. Open it up an put in a cherry, apple, pecan, sweet potato, and what ever else they had. Carry the bag back up to the lounge outside the repair locker and then move it into elevator 4's (4 ACE) main engine room and unload the pies. Then when we secured from G.Q. we would go to 4 ace and get the pies. We did that for about 3 years. We snagged a couple pizzas a few times too. The free soda was nice as well. Thanks to the Cheifs mess. A-div steam and heat/catapults owe you about 50 pies. We were pretty good a finding food. I even got us the Wardroom 1+2 cappacino machine and mix once. You got to love taking all the good shit the chiefs and officers ate right out of their mouths.

Its been done, I forget what book I read it in, I was in High school
at the time.
The USS Lexington CV2 did it for a city in Washington State, The
local Hydroelectric, dam froze one cold winter .The ship supplied
electricity for the city for a few months. I believe it was in the l930's
The book may have been "The Fighting Lady"

1st Class Assocation

Yes, there was one. it had a whole 100 members, but few ever came to the meetings. It was a sad joke. But we did fight and got head of the line privilge, another joke! When it went into the yards they where going to take about 20-30 feet which would of made it a cubby hole with a big screen tv. It was a place to go and sit and get five minutes of peace. And besides the smoke sponson this was the place for hook ups. :>) If you were a member two years you were to get a plackard when you left, I didn't get one and I was the person who took minutes and the second year a trustee. I was a member for three years. I told them about the inactive ships and how we could get nice furniture and anything we needed FREE but... no one would go help me, and IKE was going in the yards so they didn't care!

IKE Holiday Extravaganza

This is an announcement - not a story.

I'm in communication with the IKE Public Affairs Officer to see if we ex-IKE sailors could be invited to this year's IKE Extravaganza Party (In my era it was called Ike Gala) Basicaly a huge party for ship's company and airwing.

Anyway - I asked her if we could join in on the fun (sort of a reunion for us plus a chance for us to find out what IKE is up to thsee days)... She has passed on the request to the folks planning the party and will get back to me.

So... if they do extend the invitation to us - I'll post the particulars (date, time, cost, attire, etc.)

The reason I am posting this now before anything is concrete is to alert the folks who only check in sporadicaly.

I went to the one in 2000. It was held at the Double Tree Hotel, Virgina beach. The cost for ships company was $38 a night. It was awsome for a ships function. They had five rooms of different food and music! And for those lifers who want to travel free I've enclosed the JOSAC site you can go and type in KNGU for NAS Norfolk or Langley KLFI it only goes five days out but hey its free. Put the KNGU in the arrival side and hit enter. Dependents can fly now within the US. It's a thought. You can stay at a place on Norfolk Penn Hall for $5.00 a night. Langley is $30 a night at the lodge. See airdales are good for something! And Peter your site is much kinder for airdales than the Enterprise site!

Trainride from Sorrento

Department:Rx
Author:Marvin Glenn Hadley
Era:1983
Date:09/15/05

Hey, I'm pretty sure that I'm the guy in the "trainride to sorrento" picture with his back to the camera and the red shirt collar (back when I had hair). I was one of the innocent bystanders that got arrested when we hit Naples. I had hung out all day in Sorrento with Mikey C (or was it Pat H?), then got on the last train back, only to find a wild scene unfolding.

The part I remember most is when Mombo tossed Jake into the train seat and did the full body slam. I believe that's when the seat bolts gave way. Then the train conductor in his little hat and uniform came in and told Mombo something in Italian. That's when Mombo declared the train car to be the property of the US. The conductor's disappearence seemed to coincide with Mombo picking up the seat with one hand while pointing to it with his other hand.

Thanks for the laughs and the memories. I've got a few of my own that I will post in the days to come.

A different world

When I got sent to Safety, I shared an 8x10 berthing with 4 others. We had a YN3 who was not your stereotype YN (he was replaced by one when he went to the print shop, unfortunately), an HT2 who made rank quickly because he came in on the 6 year plan, myself, a BM2 who spent 16 years in the Army and got kicked out for drunkenly ramming his car into Custer's statue at Ft. Riley, KS, and an AO1 who looked about 50 but was probably 35. We younger guys got along really good and enjoyed harrassing the Safety Chief, and the BM was also pretty cool. Once before a CZI, we were field daying berthing when the AO1 walked in and took me aside. He told me I didn't have to help. I said, "I live here, too." He told me a First Class PO does not have to field day. I told him OK and kept right on mopping. He looked kind of disgusted and stormed out, probably to the Fly Locker to hang out with some like-minded lifers.

UNIFORMS/ HANKERCHIEFS

Department:Air

I forget what year women had to go to the male tie or neckerchief, anyhow my rednose pitbull ate mine over the weekend. I had a watch on Tuesday and couldn't get to the ships store (which never had them anyway). I get one, no one knows how to tie it, even with a roll of dimes. I ask Dickwa to borrow his. Oh my God you thought I asked for him to stand my watch or something. He loaned it to me and he kept coming by to check on it. It had been tied since boot camp (which was about 17 years by then). I must admit it was in fine conditiom. Well, after I got off watch I went to head, took a leak, took that neckerchief and dipped it in the urine! Carefully I got a coathanger got it out and rinsed it off a little, hung it up to dry and ironed with a wash cloth (I threw away afterwards). Jack is breathing down my neck on where's my tie? I said its fine and right here. He hugged that tie and saids thanks for taking such good care of it. Well, he transferred to do do his last tour in Key West...

First of all, ABH1, Ike didn't go help with the tsunami. We left Newport News Shipyards around January (under tug power) to go to Norfolk Shipyard. Between February and June, we spent about 45 days total at sea in small, week-long sections. Never left the East Coast, just went far enough out to where we can discharge what needs to be discharged, and to launch planes.

AIMD Peter, I think there's still a 1st Class Association, and there's even a 2nd Class Association version 2. Version 1 was around for a couple months until we got nukes elected into all of the important positions, and then disbanded it as a complete waste of time. The Associations are only around to collect ask for money and have meetings. The meeting minutes were forwarded up to the CMC and the CO, who would laugh at the idea that "all the second classes voted that they should have washers and dryers in berthing" and other stupid/ridiculous ideas. It's the military, not a democracy...

I didn't think the IKE was ready to come out of the yards, so when she said that I said are you sure? If your on the ship now how about giving AIMD Peter better details for the Gala. A good source, a good point of contact. It's nice to see the Associations haven't changed! Stupid as ever, too funny! Do you know about the inactive ships in Portsmouth you can get alot of parts free, doors lights, lockers. I know the IKE was suppose to be refitted but it didn't sound like the they were going to take care of the people and the nasty living conditions. And DRMO, I outfitted alot of 1st Classes with laptops so we could get our work done since you could never get on a computer. I do know IDT had requirements that had to be met, but hey a 166 did just fine for evals!
