Not a story
Tim Palange mentioned Carl Childers. That was also the name of the character Billy Bob Thornton played in "Slingblade". I knew that name sounded familiar the first time I saw "Slingblade". By the way, it is one of the most awesome movies ever made. You need to see it if you haven't. |
Resin discharge
The resin discharge Tim mentioned was a riot! My crew had gotten the dry run to perform the discharge, but it got delayed. We were supposed to have the next day off, but LT Sanders told me to be prepared for a call the next morning. We all went to the Shillelagh after work and partied after closing time at Noodle Central when LT Sanders calls me and said gather everyone together and report to the ship for the discharge because the oncoming crew hadn't had a dry run and they wanted it done early. I told him, "No problem, most of us are right here!" I could hear him groan, because he knew what was going on. We went in and somehow managed to get the discharge done without a hitch. Everyone in EOS got a good laugh on me when I had to puke into a trash can while my chin was pushing in the button on the sound powered phones. |
The nightly prayer
The fecal samples taken after the Alexandria port call reminded me of another story...One of the Protestant chaplains was a riot, can't remember his name but he probably would have fit right in with the Noodles. Anyway, when it came to his time to do the pre-taps prayer, he commented on the samples by saying something similar to "finally we have the chance to send up the chain of command that which has come down for so long." That was one of the best of many laughs I had on the Ikeatraz. Pete R. got all upset, saying he couldn't say "Amen" to a prayer like that. "God is a comedian playing to an audience that is afraid to laugh." -Voltaire |
Resin discharge
The only thing that made the resin discharge - and all the attendant khaki sweat - bearable was having the Noodles around running the show. |
For Charlie -- Re: Ian Forbes
Charlie, Ian Forbes was my chief in RT when I first got to Ike, and was later my chief in RM-22. I know a lot of the guys didn't like him, but I always got along with him and he always treated me fairly. He made senior chief right after I got to Ike. Anyhow, MMCS Forbes got really sick -- he had Crohn's disease. Another MMC friend of mine informed me after I got out that Senior Chief Forbes passed away. I'm not sure of the details...this is pretty much all I know. |
Ian
It was really a bummer to find out about Ian's passing. I always got along with him on and off the ship. He could be a little moody sometimes, but all of us were guilty of that at times. I always appreciated the way he and Pete took me under their wings when I was just a Nub out of RT. Also, for those who didn't know, Steely Dan Dorais passed away in 1999. He died as a result from a fall at his home in Fresno, CA. We had written each other at Christmas since we got out, and his mother wrote me the sad news. That was another major bummer like when Mike Davis and John Shabella got killed in the plane crash in Greece and John Paul got killed in a car wreck. They were all decent men and good friends who died way too soon. The Grim Reaper plays no favorites. Sorry if I bummed anybody out, but I just wanted to pay tribute to some departed friends. |
Re: Ian
Charlie, When you mentioned Ian Forbes taking you under his wing, that is kind of what he did for me when he came to RM division. Not like a "mentor", but he always looked after me for some reason. I remember when I was supposed to get my Good Conduct Medal there was a ceremony up at the foc'sle (spelling?). Anyhow, I told Senior Chief Forbes that I was going to blow it off. He was really pissed at me for this and said, "You have to go -- this is a big deal." I didn't see what the big deal was, but I went to the ceremony. After the ceremony as I was leaving, Senior Chief Forbes was waiting there to congratulate me; I didn't even know he was going to be there. It was kind of cool to know that someone actually cared what went on with his guys. It made my day, I have to tell you. |
Ian Forbes
re. Ian Forbes' passing - I hope your info is incorrect... In any case, as of 1999, he was still alive and kicking... see this link Ian was quite a character (and had an ego the size of the IKE) But all in all a good guy. What flabbergasts me about that link is that Ian became so "churchy" ... We were coming back from liberty in Singapore once when the MAA were checking us for drugs as we came aboard. They opened a box he had bought and found it full of white powder... Poor Ian understandably was freaked out... turned out that it was just desicant that the merchant had packed into it when he wrapped it. And regarding a previous story of playboy bunnies drawn on the RX periscopes... I always suspected Ian was the perp. |
Restriced Airman In Charge
Airman K. has had a 2 year naval career so far and has spent 9mos of it UA. He recently came back on Jan 12 of this year and was immeadiatly put on restriction. He ended up working as part of the V-2 Berthing Crew. His POIC is on 10 days of leave and the 3rd class in charge went UA that same day. At the end of the day when his POIC was leaving to go on leave the LPO come to the berthing and said the Airman K. (restricted airman) was in charge. It has been that way for about a week now and everything seems to be working out just fine. Just goes to say that not all restricted personel are shitbags some just make bad decisions. |
Ian Forbes
Charlie, I'm not sure they got the right Forbes, I thought he got discharged for medical reasons in 87. You probably would Know better than me. It was about the same time Bruce Hennigan got out for the same reason. Sorry to hear about Steely Dan. We didn't always see eye to eye but he was a good guy. I saw CDR Sanders in 93. He was a pretty good Joe and a good shit screen. I think he's still in. |
